Simra's story

By naila ahmed, Ubair Umer | Executive. Director, Assistant Project Supervisor

12 years old Simra*, the daughter of a laborer in a small town in rural Sindh, Pakistan walked into one of our Primary Health clinics in Gharo. When she went in to see the doctor, our physician did not talke long to determine that the child was presenting with classic symptoms of severe anemia. She was complaninig of  severe weakness, fatigue and loss of appetite among other issues. The doctor sent her for lab work to confirm her initail diagnosis, and SImra has been advised to come for a followup after her lab results are in.

Though Simra's case maybe severe , in general iron defficency in children is a common problem. It can occur at many levels, from a mild deficiency to all the way to iron deficiency anemia - a condition is which blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Untreated iron deficiency can affect a child's growth and development. Unfortunately most signs of iron deficiency in children do not apppear unitl iron deficiency anemia occurs, as it was the case with Simra.

This is why we need the support of our donors so that under-served children can be diagnosed and then provided treatment at low to no cost to the patient.

With deep gratitude,

Naila Ahmed
