As in many developing countries, maternal and child health issues are some of the commonest cases we deal with at the Shikarpur, Charsadda and Swat facilities served by SHINE Humanity and its affiliate, Comprehensive Disaster Response Services [CDRS]. Around 15000 beneficiaries have been provided medical care during the first quarter of this year. Between 80-90 percent of these beneficiaries have been women and children.
During these winter months, the medical and paramedical staff at these facilities have dealt with a surge in the cases of respiratory tract ailments and have provided the patients with medications, oxygen and nebulization as needed. One of the patients at the Pediatric ward in Shikarpur was 6 month old Ab Ghafoor, who came to this facility on the 27th of February, with a high fever and symptoms of a respiratory tract infection. She was treated for her symptoms and sent home after her condition improved. Ab’s family home was damaged during the floods in 2010 and her father earns about $2.20 per day at a Tandoor [bread-making site], hardly enough for a family of 12 that he supports. Ab’s family decided to bring her to this facility as they live nearby and knew they would get free, quality care.
Two-year old Manahil’s family lives under similar constrained circumstances and she was brought to the Charsadda facility that is supported with funding from individual donors, Global Giving and IDRF. Manahil [photographed with her mother] has asthma and the free medical care she gets at this facility helps ease the burden on her family.
We are very grateful for all our contributors who help us in caring for these and numerous others. Our funds are running low and we look forward to your continued support in the coming months. Thank you for all your help.
