Sakina's Story

By Zaheer Laghari & Naila Ahmed | Project Manager & Development Director

Sakina Bibi

Epilepsy is a debilitating disease that takes a severe toll not only on the individual but the entire family. Poverty makes the disease even more challenging as misconceptions about the disease, especially among the poor make a difficult situation even worse.

Sakina* is a nineteen year old girl who has been suffering from epileptic fits from an early age. Her father passed away when she was just seven years old and her uncle took over the financial responsibilities of her, as well as of her five siblings. The family is so poor, it is a struggle to put food on the table for the entire family.Caring for a chronic patient is an added burden and many a times there is no money left over to treat Sakina.

Fortunately for Sakina, her family live in a village near Gharo. Her family has been visiting SHINE Humanity’s Gharo clinic for many years now and Sakina has been regularly receiving free medicines to treat her illness.

The poor in Pakistan are already at a disadvantage, if you add a debilitating and chronic disease to the mix, the burden becomes almost too much to bear.

We are very grateful to you, our donors, who have made it possible for us to treat patients like Sakina who can then live a normal life.

Your donations have a direct impact on the lives of needy people and we hope you will continue to support our projects in the coming year as well.

Wishing you a vey Happy New Year!

With Gratitude,

Naila Ahmed

* In keeping with Sakina's wishes, we took a picture of her with her face turned away from the camera.
