Sumar's Story

By Naila Ahmed, Zaheer Laghari | Executive Director,Project Manager

Sumar during treatment
Sumar during treatment

Sumar* aged 5, was playing with his siblings one evening in their one room hut. His mother was cooking dinner on their clay stove. As she was frying vegetables in hot oil, Sumar ran after a rolling ball and within seconds the oil had spilled onto his leg.

Sumar suffered second degree burns. The poor parents had no money to rush the screaming child to a hospital, they tried to bathe the wound with homemade remedies but in the morning the child was in great pain,he was running high fever and the wound was blistering.

One of their neighbors suggested that they take the child to SHINE Humanity Clinic in Gharo.

At the clinic,Sumar was attended to by a qualified doctor. His wound was cleaned out, medication and dressing were applied. He was given oral medicine to relieve his pain. He continued to visit the clinic over the coming weeks to get his wound cleaned and dressed.

An Incident like this is a common occurrence in the homes of the very poor. Families of 8 to 10 people on an average live in a cramped room which serves as their bedroom, living room and kitchen all rolled in one. Little children are vulnerable to so many hazards. Often the parents are too indigent to take their children to large hospitals so clinics like SHINE Humanity are a godsend to them. They are able to get good quality care at a nominal cost of 30 cents per visit and all medications they receive are free for a period of three days.

SHINE Humanity is able to help patients like Sumar only because of the generosity of their donors. We are truly honored to have supporters who trust our organization and the work we do.

We hope you will consider our cause worthy of your supoort as well,

With heartfelt Gratitude
