In 2026, Move Forward Foundation delivered 107 sports, dance and creative workshops across 37 asylum reception locations in the Netherlands, reaching 1,313 participant attendances among children and young people. The programme included activities at asylum reception centres (AZCs), reception locations for unaccompanied minor refugees (AMV) and emergency shelters.

Through dance, boxing, kickboxing, street gym, rap, basketball, photography, theatre and games, children and young people had the opportunity to discover new activities, develop physical skills and express themselves in a positive and supportive environment. All workshops were offered free of charge.

Our professional coaches adapted the activities to the ages, interests and needs of each group. Many of our coaches have experience working with young people from refugee backgrounds, and some also bring lived experience of displacement. Coaches received training in trauma-sensitive approaches, including creating a safe atmosphere and recognising signs of tension or distress.

The workshops offered more than physical activity. They created moments of joy, self-expression, positive attention and connection in an environment often marked by uncertainty and change. Participants encouraged one another, tried new things and built confidence through shared experiences. Some young people said the workshops helped them take their minds off their worries for a while, while others asked when the coaches would return.

Feedback from participating locations was very positive. Based on 19 location evaluations, the average rating was 9.1 out of 10. Staff particularly appreciated the coaches’ enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to connect with participants. Several locations expressed interest in welcoming the workshops again.

The tour exceeded its revised target of 100 workshops, delivering 107 in total. These results demonstrate the continued need for accessible sports and creative activities for children and young people living in reception facilities. Move Forward Foundation aims to build on these experiences and continue creating opportunities for young people to move, connect, express themselves and experience moments of joy and belonging.
