“I really grew as a music teacher and educator while teaching with ETM-LA [this past year] and I feel developing relationships with the teachers and students of these schools has opened my eyes to the diversity of learners and educators in this world,” shares one Education Through Music-LA music teacher.
Our music teachers are top professional artists and educators from a myriad of musical backgrounds including jazz, Classical, band, vocal, and world music and see on average over 600 children per week throughout such Los Angeles County regions as Burbank, Chinatown, Compton, East LA, and the San Fernando Valley. Through over 100 hours of professional development and mentorship for ETM-LA teachers - including a Summer Course on Kodály Methodology, the ETM Academy at Oberlin in Ohio, and ETM-LA’s weeklong intensive Summer Training Institute, music teachers continue to receive feedback and support to improve upon teaching skills.
A teacher shares, “Teaching with ETM-LA has revived my desire to grow as a teacher. Having the professional development opportunities and quality feedback has both excited me professionally and stretched me to become better.”
This past year, we our evaluation shows that 100% of music teachers feel the music program has increased their students' focus in school and 100% of classroom teachers agree that music education is a vital part of the core curriculum.
Education Through Music-LA will expand to 3 new partner schools to serve a total of 16 schools reaching over 7,000 children with sequential, comprehensive weekly music instruction. Every child will receive weekly, yearlong music instruction as part of the core curriculum.
We are seeing the positive results first-hand, and look forward to sharing more updates and stories from the field. Thank you for helping us further our mission so every child may have hope for a brighter future!
