The last time you heard from us we were just embarking on the 2014-15 school year serving over 7,000 children at 16 partner schools in Los Angeles with weekly music instruction. We are excited to share stories of how you are directly
impacting our school communities through high quality comprehensive weekly music instruction.
Heather Breene, a dedicated music teacher in her 2nd year of teaching with Education Through Music-LA, is making a positive impact on the Rio Vista Elementary School community. A Parent from Rio Vista shares, “Kaia is having so much fun and honestly the band program is the only thing keeping her motivated! Wednesdays are now the only day she doesn't gripe about school! I am stunned at how dedicated she seems to be so quickly, she practices more than her older sister on her cello! So, thank you for providing an outlet for our kids. It’s wonderful and we thank you."
Heather shares, “Hearing feedback from parents helps to motivate me further, and let me know that this is truly my calling and what I love to do.”
Other music teachers also provide insight on how the music programs nurture their students’ learning and development. Music Teacher Alex Collie-Hartmann shared one of his favorite moments from the classroom, when “a third grader figured out a complicated musical concept on her own. Not only did she extrapolate the information that was provided but she also applied it even further. This is the type of learning that I love to see.”
Professional development continues to support the music instruction in our classrooms. On Saturday, November 1st music teachers gathered together for an intensive day of training on such topics as Lesson Planning and Building Aims, Classroom Management, and Using Djembe in the Classroom. Master Senegal Drummer, Malik Sow presented new and engaging interactive djembe strategies including traditional African styles of drumming.
We are so grateful for your continued support! If you would like to join our campaign again for this current 2014-15 year, one great day to do so is Tuesday, December 2nd - #GivingTuesday which includes a matching campaign through GlobalGiving!
Thank you for giving our children hope for a brighter future through music education!
