Happy New Year from Humane Canada! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We are pleased to share a National Pet Food Bank update with you as we begin the new year.
As the financial crisis continues into 2023, pet guardians are reporting an increasing need for support from their community, particularly for pet food and essential care items. Solutions are necessary to ensure that families and their beloved companion animals can stay together.
This is why we are developing Canada’s first national pet food bank network. Our aim is to collaborate not only with humane societies, SPCAs and the pet food industry, but also with human food banks and the social service sector to increase access to pet food and supplies for those who need it.
We are excited to say that we have just launched a National Pet Food Bank Survey, an initiative that will take inventory of existing pet food banks within the animal welfare sector across the country. We plan to expand this initiative to the human welfare sector as well. Our goal is to develop an interactive map that will bring awareness to pet food bank support, in order to keep companion animals fed and to reduce pet relinquishment.
We are also just wrapping up our third cycle of National Pet Food Bank grants. We are happy to have received 38 applications for funding and our Grants Review Committee is currently deliberating which projects will be chosen. The grant recipients will be announced soon!
Because of donors like you, we are able to help organizations feed over 5000 companion animals this year - amazing! Thank you so much for your ongoing support, your gift helps to keep companion animals where they belong, with their families.
