National Pet Food Bank Program

We are pleased to share an update with you on our National Pet Food Bank program. As the financial crisis persists, we continue to work toward making community support more accessible to ensure that pets can stay where they belong - with their families. A large part of this work involves the development of our National Pet Food Bank map. The goal of this project is to create a source of information so that those who might be facing pet food insecurity can locate pet food assistance programs in their area.

In our January update, we shared that we were collecting information for our map through the National Pet Food Bank Survey. We received over 100 responses from animal welfare organizations across Canada that are currently running a pet food bank! We have now turned to the human welfare and social services sectors to collect information about their pet food bank programs. Also in early 2023, we wrapped up our third cycle of National Pet Food Bank grants and are excited to say that we have awarded nine grants to our fantastic recipients. We continue to support them with the development of their pet food banks.

Recently, we coordinated the distribution of a large amount of pet food that was donated to the National Pet Food Bank Network by Greater Good Charities. Thanks to this amazing donation, we were able to help distribute four truckloads of pet food among six organizations with pet food banks, offering support to people and their pets to help keep families together.

In closing, we want to share with you a deeply impactful message that one of our grant recipients passed along to us from one of their service users:

"Since you've been giving me cat food, I no longer have to share my food with my pets. I don't go hungry anymore."
