The Fortitude of Internally Displaced Children

By Suzanne Plopper | Project manager

Mariam: education is important to us all!
Mariam: education is important to us all!

This is the story of Mariam, in her last year of secondary school at the Lycee Moderne de l’Amitie.  I am from the village of Soubo.  Due to the insecurity and threat of violence in my village (a serious problem throughout much of northern Burkina Faso), my family was forced to leave our home.  For the past year, armed men (jihadists) have chased us out of our village and burned our granaries, our crops and our homes.  Finally, we arrived in Ouahigouya with only the clothes on our backs.  Not knowing where to sleep, we found ourselves in a field with 300 other displaced persons from our and other villages.  Many in this camp are of my age.  We live in solidarity.  As a student now displaced, I had no idea how to continue my studies.  I heard talk of Global NEEED Burkina and several of us from the camp went to their office to see if they could help us.  They accepted us (including my sister and two brothers) and they provide us a noon meal as well.  Without the help of Global NEEED and its partners, God only knows what would have become of us.  I thank NEEED and its partners with all my heart for allowing us to continue our educations.

To our GlobalGiving donors: we (Burkina Faso Girls’ Education Fund) provided the funding for 111 village girls, displaced from their villages by violence in the past year, to continue their educations at the Lycee Moderne de l’Amitie (LMA).   In addition, at the request of the government, NEEED has allocated classroom space at the LMA for 280 primary school students and their teachers, displaced from their villages, all in an effort to enable children to continue their educations.

We welcome your solidarity and generous donations in helping Global NEEED respond to the educational and nutritional needs of displaced children in northern Burkina.

THANK YOU!
