Provision of hygiene kits
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings and thank you very much for your kind support to our project to provide assistance in terms of water and sanitation to earthquake victims. This reporting period we focused our support to Dhulikel located at the Eastern rim of Kathmandu valley. This time we continue to provide hygiene kits comprising bath and wash soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, towels and nail cutters. These hygiene materials are very much lacking in the area and the beneficiaries comprising mostly poor farming families are very happy about our support. We were able to provide kits for 200 families during this period.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings and thank you very much for your kind support to our project providing sanitation and hygiene services to those affected by the earthquake. This reporting period we spent time to prepare a localized training module on community-led total sanitation following the generic guide that we used in our trainings here in the Philippines. This is to ensure that the capacity-building activities will jive with local culture and traditions. We integrated practical tools, exercises and impart facilitation skills for sanitation and hygiene demand creation. We also integrated demand creation tools such as mapping areas where open defecation occurs, shit and medical cost calculation, fecal oral transmission and food and shit demo.
Our next step will be to pre-test the 2-day module and then conduct the training among 25 local leaders this coming September when an expert from the Philippines will do fieldwork in Nepal.

Dear Friends,
Greetings and thank you very much for your kind support to our safe sanitation initiative for poor households affected by the earthquake in Nepal. We continue to link-up with local organizations in Nepal and deliver this much needed services in coordination with the local organizations, namely the Visionary Youth Initiative Foundation – Nepal and the Alay Nepal which is an organization run by Filipinos residing in Nepal. This reporting period, we introduce the SaTo pan or flapper pan which is an inexpensive innovation designed for poor households in cultures where squatting in using the toilet is a norm. The SaTo pan uses a simple trap door design that forms a water seal at the bottom of a pan set into a cement slab over the pit. The water seal reduces disease transmission by insects, reduces odor and reduces the volume of water needed to flush. The pan is very cheap and can be manufactured locally. It features a counterweight trap door that opens upon rapid addition of small amount of water. The trap retains a small amount of water in the closed position to create a water seal. No change is required in user behavior.
Initially the SaTo pans that we will be using are the pans that we were not able to use in our Typhoon Haiyan response in Leyte. Once we are able to assess acceptability we plan to expand production and promotion of this type of toilet.
