Challenge

On August 26, 2026, Nepal was struck by devastating flash floods along the Bhotekoshi/Trishuli River system, affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts. By now, 450 people have been confirmed dead, with more 1500 still missing. An estimated 60,000 people have been severely affected, with extensive damage to homes, roads, schools, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure. A major highway link between Betrawati and the Rasuwagadhi border crossing has been washed away.

Solution

UniCoN will mobilize emergency relief teams to reach affected families in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading with food, clean water, hygiene kits, and temporary shelter materials. Working alongside local disaster authorities and community volunteers, UniCoN will identify the most vulnerable households and distribute relief directly, prioritizing displaced families, children, women, and the elderly during this critical response phase.

Long-Term Impact

We are also planning ahead for the recovery phase. Many children in the affected areas will face disruptions to their education, and we believe it is important to address this learning gap early. Our plan is to establish temporary learning centers in the flood-affected areas, based on need, so that children can continue learning even while permanent recovery is underway. While we cannot reach everyone, we are working out a plan to target at least 200 children in this first phase, alongside govt.
