Farol: a guiding light to scale positive impact

By Raissa Testahy | Project Leader

Farol is our program designed to prepare impact-driven businesses and community-based organizations to access funding.

The initiative combines practical management tools, tailored one-on-one support, and capacity-building to strengthen organizational autonomy.

Farol is the portuguese word for a ‘beacon’. Its goal is clear: to promote financial structuring and equip organizations to demonstrate their readiness for funding to donors and impact investors.

One example of Farol in action is in the Apiaká-Kayabi Indigenous Territory, in Mato Grosso, where the Apiaká, Kayabi, and Munduruku peoples rely on Brazil nut extraction as a strategic activity for income generation, forest conservation, and the strengthening of their traditional ways of life.

Despite the strong potential of this value chain, local associations and the cooperative faced challenges related to financial management and governance. Strengthening institutional capacities became essential to consolidate local processing of Brazil nuts and expand access to new funding opportunities.

With technical support from the Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV), we contributed to structuring financial controls, improving accountability practices, and strengthening local governance. This approach integrates income generation with forest conservation, while respecting local traditions and cultural practices.

This was a very meaningful experience for our community. We deepened our understanding of how to sustain our association and identified possible pathways to promote improvements in our community. Throughout the meetings, through the exchange of ideas, we collectively discovered new perspectives and opportunities.”
