This year, we have 620 students enrolled in our after-school Wildlife Clubs (WLCs) across the 16 partner schools around Kibale National Park in Uganda. These clubs participate in weekly conservation education activities and lead conservation actions in their schools and communities.
This past term, clubs celebrated local wildlife, in particular chimpanzees and elephants, during globally recognized events (World Chimpanzee Day on Jul 14 and World Elephant Day on Aug 12). Club members acted out skits about threats to these species, learned more about elephant and chimpanzee behavior and ecology through new curriculum, and participated in fun activities such as word searches and competitions to make the best wildlife models out of clay.
This term, Wildlife Club members also led demonstrations for their peers, teachers, parents, and the public to raise awareness about some of the conservation projects they have worked on in their schools and communities, including construction of improved cook stoves and beehives and waste management through reuse and recycling.
