Celebrating 2024 World Chimpanzee Day

Our project aims to nurture the next generation of conservationists, and being located near Kibale National Park—home to Uganda's largest wild chimpanzee population—makes this mission even more vital. To support this, we hosted a series of engaging and educational events for the 800 students in the after-school Wildlife Clubs from 16 partner primary schools on World Chimpanzee Day in July.

In collaboration with the Kibale Chimpanzee Project (KCP), we welcomed their veterinarians and anti-poaching teams to share their vital work. They discussed the severe threat of wire snares set by illegal hunters, which can cause devastating injuries or death to chimpanzees. The anti-poaching team actively removes these snares, while KCP vets treat injured chimps. The Wildlife Clubs were thrilled to meet these dedicated conservationists and learn how a passion for wildlife can lead to meaningful careers.

We also had the honor of hosting Dr. Emily Otali, Africa's first female Ph.D. primatologist, who spoke to 550 students about her inspiring career studying chimpanzee behavior. Her talk left a lasting impression, and she further engaged with Wildlife Club members who have been practicing animal behavioral research at home (on goats, chilckens and dogs). We have some budding behavioral scientists for sure!

To wrap up the festivities, the students showcased their creativity by sculpting chimpanzee models from locally-sourced clay. Their artistic talent was remarkable, and their creations were a highlight of the celebrations.
