Things are tough at the moment in Nepal, where the omicron variant has arrived in force and only about 40% of the population are vaccinated. The schools have just shut again for at least 3 weeks, which obviously has a detrimental effect on the children we work with. Since the start of the pandemic the schools have been closed for a total of 70 weeks and our children have no access to online learning. However, we have setup community classes in the slum areas where we work, to try and engage the children with at least some education.
Our social workers have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to reintegrate the children staying in our street shelter with their families. Bikash (not his real name) was found five years ago at the age of 8 years old sleeping and begging on the streets of Pokhara and was taken to our shelter. We discovered, his alcoholic mother was in prison and his father had disappeared without trace. When his mother was released, our social workers worked with her to turn her life around in order to be able to look after her son.
Bikash had no legal identity whatsoever and so our staff tried to find his father, which took almost three years of searching. It was a major achievement the day Bikash received his birth certificate, without which, it is tricky to enrol in school. His parents started living together again and although there were rocky and violent patches, they have been receptive to the counselling and support we have offered them. Bikash is now living at home and studying at the local community school, when it opens again. The whole family will receive support for at least the next two years as per the guidelines of the National Child Rights Council.
We are extremely grateful for your generous support but sadly there are many more children like Bikesh, so it would be wonderful if you would consider making a further one off donation or even setting up a small monthly donation.
Thank you and let's hope that 2022 is a better year for everyone.
