Nunya Village Update March 2026

Nunya Village is becoming more than a handmade art and craft centre. It is a space where students meet after school to discuss and share ideas about their community, school, heritage, culture and tradition. This discussion becomes creative and innovative ideas where art and craft skills are fast becoming great opportunities for students in and around Adaklu

At Nunya Village, our students are committed to becoming generation of artisans in kente weaving, wood carving, pottery, all kinds of beads designing, door mats weaving, sleeping mat weaving and paintings to preserve their culture and heritage.

With over 60 students’ artisans acquiring skills across various product design, Nunya Village is committed to transforming these creative skills into business opportunities where students artisans equiped and unearthing their creative entrepreneurial skills. Each students carries a story of determination, creativity, innovation and passion and together they form a growing community of handmade skilled art and craft artisans.

Since the beginning of 2026, we have welcomed 10 new students across the Adaklu communities around the Adaklu Mountain. These young students brought new ideas in art and craft and a renewed purpose to the Nunya Village environment.

Currently, our students are busy in our beads designing, door mat weaving, sleeping mat weaving and painting with a total number of 48 students. This includes 15 beads designers, 5 door mat weavers, 5 sleeping mat weavers, and 23 painting students. These crafts continue to attract strong participation with students artisans dedicating long hours to mastering them with all the techniques required

Over the past three months, these students artisans have produced approximately 125 handcrafted products. This includes handmade clay beads, finely shaped clay pottery, carefully woven sleeping mats and door mats from straws and painting canvas. Each of these items reflects patience, discipline and pride in art and craftmanship.

A major highlight of our past three months was the welcoming of a Visually Impaired Artisan John, who has mastered the weaving of door mats and currently train students while he makes a living from every sale of the products.

Other highlights include our participation in the recently held Volta Trade & Investment Fair where Nunya Village showcased its finest works to a wider audience. The exhibition created a wider visibility for students’ artisans, network with new customers, and affirms the value of locally made handmade products. It was a proud moment seeing our students confidently present their works.

Due to the increasing number of students at Nunya Village, there is the urgent need to purchase raw materials for the various art and craft produced.

  • Door mat weaving materials: straw, wooden frames, and colours to dye straw
  • Sleeping mat weaving materials: straw, thread, colours to dye straw, and wooden frame
  • Bead designing materials: clay, bottles, thread, colours, fabric, cane, calabash
  • Painting materials: different types of brushes, different colours of acrylics paints, fabric, paper, wooden frames
  • Kente weaving materials: thread

The main challenges of Nunya Village is inadequate Volunteers to train our students in some of the Art and Craft programs and funds to purchase the raw materials s to train the students.

The above notwithstanding, Nunya Village has been an Eco Environment where students are given the opportunity afterschool to create and design handmade products.
