With your help we have been able to support 904 families that needed ourNurses for Night Care Service in 2022.
As you know, Irish Hospice Foundation funds the specialist Nurses for Night Care service for patients dying of non-malignant conditions such as dementia, motor neuron disease, respiratory disease, heart failure and kidney disease (these illnesses account for 70% of deaths in Ireland). The service is a direct benefit to patients as it enables them to spend their final days in their own home, in their own bed with their families and loved ones by their side. There is no service like ours in Ireland.
The nurses stay in the home throughout the night, providing nursing care, practical help and reassurance to both patient and family. The service can give a significant support for families at an exceedingly difficult time. Each night of care costs around€337and this gives someone the choice and dignity to spend their final hours at home, with their loved ones and memories
In the words of a close family member of a woman who received care through this service, they describe how they could rest knowing their family member was being cared for throughout the night.
“Our nurse Ann was a crucial part of ‘Team Tess.’ She was someone who willingly took over Tess’s care. Her calm, reassuring nature meant that our family could leave Tess’s side without worry. We knew she was in confident, capable hands.’
Since the inception of this service in 2006, IHF has cared forover 6,000 people through its Nurses for Night Care service. In 2022, with your support, we provided 2,673 nights of nursing care, free of charge, every night of the year in every county of Ireland.
Each year sees a growing demand for this service and last year we saw a12% increase from2021). Based on our figures, we estimate that this year the cost of the service will increase to over €1,000,000. We could not meet this growing demand without your support.
Thank you for helping us to allow people their final wish and provide precious nights of nursing care to families in Ireland.
