The demand for our Nurses for Night Care service increased by over 30%in 2023. Our provisional figures show that 2,800 nights of nursing care was provided to people and families in Ireland. The funds raised via GlobalGiving have helped us keep up with this growing demand. We thank all those that have donated and supported this vital service.
As you know, ours is the only free at-home Night Nursing service for patients suffering from non-cancer related diseases. That’s everything from dementia to heart disease.As we look back at the figures each year we can see the demand for Nurses for Night Care is increasing. Your supporthelps us meet this unprecedented increase in demand and brings comfort to so many families across Ireland.
One such family that availed of the service was Annie and her family. Annie was fit and healthy and worked right up to her 70s running a local shop. When she was in her 90s her health declined. Annies’s daughter Shona wanted Annie’s final wish to be granted and that was to be at home in her final days. Shona and her siblings knew they couldn’t do this alone.
In Shona’s own words ‘This was the final gift we could give her.……Our Nurses for Night Care was wonderful, she was like an angel arriving on our doorstep. We knew she was going to mind our Mam but she also minded us.’
On the third night the nurse gently woke Shona and her siblings to let them know it was time. Annie was granted a gift of a good death wrapped in her families love and with her cat, Boots by her side.
‘We miss her so much…but when you honestly feel it couldn’t have gone better, that makes a real difference.’ Yours is a gift beyond measure and one that Shona and her family won’t forget.
‘I’m so grateful this service is available. It benefits the person who is dying, and their whole family….Thank you.’
This year we estimate it will cost over €1 million to meet the growing demand for our Nurses for Night Care service..Your continued support is helping us to bring comfort and peace to so many families at a very difficult time.
