This year The Irish Hospice Foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary, from small beginnings, we have grown and are proud to be striving for better end of life care for all the people of Ireland. This is also the 10th year of our Nurses for Night Care programme that you have generously supported. Our objective is to ensure that everyone who wants to die at home throughout Ireland is granted their final wish.
In 2015 there was a 30% increase in the number of requests for the programme and a 35% increase in the number of people who received the service. Nurses for Night Care delivered 1,734 nights of care and enabled 548 people to die with dignity in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by their loved ones and their memories. Last year, to meet the demand, this service cost €555,000, €71,000 more than 2014. The increase in demand is stretching our resources, this year we expect to have requests from around 880 families. The Irish Hospice Foundation receives no core state funding and relies on voluntary donations to provide this vital service.
Whilst it is an ongoing service, we view each person we care for as an individual and hope to raise enough money to provide support for everyone who needs our help. Thanks to your support, and the support of people like you, we have so far managed to meet this demand.
