Premature babies face a high risk of death in Nigeria due to poor access to proper nutrition and neonatal care. At Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research, we aim to provide essential nutrition, fortified breast milk, and specialized feeding support to premature infants in low-income and rural communities. This project will also train mothers and health workers on safe feeding methods and supply nutritional supplements to improve survival and healthy growth.
Each year, thousands of premature babies in Nigeria die within the first month of life. Many families cannot afford fortified milk or proper feeding care. Health facilities in rural areas often lack incubators, nutrition kits, or trained staff. Malnutrition among premature infants leads to long-term complications, delayed growth, and preventable deaths. Without targeted nutritional support, these babies have little chance of survival in their early months.
This project will supply fortified breast milk, nutritional supplements, and feeding kits to hospitals and rural clinics caring for premature babies. We will train mothers on breastfeeding techniques and educate health workers on feeding and neonatal nutrition. The program will also provide hygiene materials and monitoring tools to ensure babies receive consistent care, helping them gain weight and develop safely during their first months of life.
Improved nutrition and early feeding support will reduce infant mortality and strengthen Nigeria's neonatal health outcomes. Mothers will gain knowledge to care for premature babies at home, and health workers will be better equipped to support fragile infants. Subsequently, more children will survive and grow into healthy adults. The project will also build a network of trained caregivers who can sustain local neonatal nutrition programs beyond this initiative.
