On Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security, it is important to raise awareness about the issues of malnutrition and food insecurity that face many communities, especially in Mali.
According to the Borgen Project: “Ranking 182nd on the Human Development Index (the 6th lowest ranking on the planet,) Mali is recognized as one of the most nutritionally unstable and under developed countries in the world. About four in 10 children under the age of 5 are underweight, and one in four people are as well. As a study from 2014 indicates, over 1.5 million people are not sustained by a regular supply of food.”
Our nutritional support program is focused on getting regular meals to HIV+ patients; the majority of whom have families with small children. However, our program is about much more than just alleviating malnutrition among a very vulnerable sector of the population. One of the primary causes of poverty for people living with HIV/AIDS in Mali is the stigmatization that surrounds them in their daily life. They can be fired from their jobs or rejected by their extended families and communities.
Breaking the cycle of stigma at the clinic by providing comprehensive care and nutritional support, is just the first step towards improving the lives of our patients, but it’s an important one.
Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to provide this program with consistency over the years.
You gift is providing food, but also, much, much more!
