We are going to celebrate World Rabies Day in afew days around the world, with the theme: Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths. While there is now a global drive to use a One Health approach for the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies cases by 2030, we were the first to start using this holistic approach in Zimbabwe some years ago. This was following the death of an 8-year old girl who had died after being bitten by a rabid dog in Mahenye. Following this tragic death, we developed dog vaccination campaigns in this very remote community as well as education campaigns with school children and different target groups. While Shangaan people were intially very reluctant to have their dogs vaccinated due to many misbeliefs and misinformations, the building of trust between Shangaan people and the One Health team led to a broader vaccination coverage, and no further cases of human rabies were reported. A true case of One Health for Zero deaths!
