One Million Tree Project

Introduction

Following the submission of our last report on 31 July 2025, African Soul Initiative has undertaken a new strategic activity aligned with the goals of the One Million Tree Project—the development of a Fruit Tree Education Book.
This initiative is part of our long-term effort to strengthen environmental literacy, improve community participation, and enhance the sustainability of fruit tree planting and care.

This report outlines the progress made over the last three months, detailing the work completed, the purpose of the book, community involvement, and the next steps.

Purpose of the Book

The upcoming Fruit Tree Education Book will serve as a comprehensive, practical guide on fruit trees that are central to the One Million Tree Project. Its primary objectives are to:

• Educate communities, schools, and households about the importance of fruit trees.
• Provide step-by-step guidance on seed preparation, planting, and maintenance.
• Improve survival rates of seedlings distributed to communities.
• Support our ongoing environmental sensitization efforts with clear and accurate written information.
• Strengthen long-term ownership and understanding of fruit tree benefits.

Once finalized, the book will be used across schools, village meetings, awareness campaigns, and training workshops.

Activity Progress (August – October 2025)

1. Drafting and Structuring the Book

     Significant progress has been made in content creation:

• Introduction Drafted: The opening chapter describes fruit trees as vital contributors to nutrition, environmental restoration, and household resilience.

• Main Structure Designed: The book is organized by fruit tree species, each with sections covering; Botanical identity, Local names, Nature of the seed, Seed preparation and germination, Nursery practices and transplanting, Growth habits and maintenance, Nutritional and economic benefits

• Species Profiles Started: Work has begun on mango, orange, avocado, guava, jackfruit, and papaya tree profiles.

2. Field Data Collection

    To ensure accuracy and practical value:

• Observations were taken from the Kalungu nursery bed, focusing on germination, watering, and survival patterns.
• Local farmers provided additional information on traditional knowledge, local names, and indigenous seed-handling practices.
• Experiences from previous planting seasons were documented to guide users on what works best in local conditions.

3. Community Engagement & Feedback

The book development activity has supported our ongoing community       awareness campaigns:

• Sample content was shared informally in village workshops and group meetings.
• Teachers, youth leaders, and farmers contributed suggestions to make the book simple and community-friendly.
• Community members expressed strong interest in having a written guide, especially to improve fruit tree survival at household level.

Challenges Encountere

1. Limited Resources for Content Development: Access to comprehensive .  reference materials and botanical manuals is still limited, slowing down technical verification.

2. Funding Constraints:Additional resources are required for; Professional editing and formatting, Photos and illustrations, Printing and community distribution.

3. Time Limitations: Fieldwork, community engagements, and nursery activities run concurrently with book development, stretching available time.

Next Steps

• Complete Remaining Species Profiles for all fruit trees propagated in our nursery and surrounding communities.
• Gather Visual Content including photos, diagrams, and illustrations to support learners.
• Manuscript Review: Begin editing, translation (where necessary), and design.
• Pilot Testing: Share sample sections with two schools and community groups for feedback.
• Seek Donor Support: Explore fundraising opportunities to cover printing and distribution.

Conclusion

The last three months have marked strong progress in developing an educational resource that will enhance community knowledge and improve fruit tree survival rates. While still in draft form, the book lays a foundation for better-informed planting and care across all project communities. With donor support, we aim to complete, print, and distribute this important guide in the coming months.
