One toilet for one poor family in Pakistan

The amount that has been received by AWARD will be spent on constructing four toilets for needy families in the rural areas of Faisalabad. Due to high and unsettling inflation (nearly 46%) in the country, AWARD decided to postpone construction during the last quarter.

AWARD has started building the toilets along with one-room houses for the flood-affected communities of Sindh, who lost their homes during the disaster. The AWARD team has been meeting communities and doing assessments of the marginalized and remote areas where open defecation is quite common. AWARD Pakistan will be constructing 40 toilets in this quarter for these communities. The project on GlobalGiving has generated great support and will continue reaching out to communities and families where toilets are still an exception. Nearly 10 percent of the population of Pakistan lacks access to sanitary toilets, enabling diseases like typhoid, polio, diarrhea, jaundice, and cholera to flourish. The women and children with no toilets venture outside the house in pitch darkness with a gas lamp every day, with no access to a toilet for the rest of the day, making them vulnerable and unsafe.
