Training in business management skills is essential for women and the youth living in the argan forest as business opportunities need to be optimized in a just and equitable manner. Indeed, the area is caracterized by strong rural to urban migration associated with poor social services and infrastructures - especially health and education - as well as high poverty levels.
Our sister organisation in Morocco, One Health Maroc, recently conducted workshops on business training to empower women and the youth economically in the argan forest. Specific activities included awareness raising on entrepreneurship and leadership for women and the youth, especially those involved in cooperatives which produce the well-known argan oil. Argan oil production is the backbone of sustainable development of the region but the argan oil industry has recently seen new challenges in the form of economic domination by international companies trying to acquire a monopoly on this lucrative trade.
Through these activities, local economic growth based on the sustainable use of natural resources and gender equity will be promoted and will contribute to the conservation of the exceptional bio-cultural heritage and traditional know-hows in the argan forest.
