Is Education a luxury?

By Jane Best | Project leader

In July 2022 30 students from the Wadi Zayne kindergarten graduated following the end of the education year.

These children now have the chance to continue to elementary school and, thanks to the kindergarten teaching, they have all gained a place in Lebanese schools. The families feel a great sense of gratitude to the teachers and counsellors, who have helped the children to overcome the challenges of living in uncertain conditions.

The economic situation in Lebanon is severe and people are struggling from day to day. This is even more difficult for refugee communities. Some families are forced to send their children out to work, depriving them of the chance of an education. These creates stresses on other children who may already be affected by the trauma of displacement.

Events like the graduation ceremony for these kindergartners offer some sense of normality and a sense of achievement for the children; the therapeutic advantage cannot be under-stated. In addition, it provides a boost to the parents who have something to celebrate.

For so many people in richer countries, education is a given, whereas for millions of refugee children it is a luxury that a small percentage can enjoy.

Thank you for continuing to support this valuable activity.
