Amplifying the work of young people - October 2023

By Eric Ortega from Global Changemakers | Programmes Manager

Throughout 2023 you have received a number of updates on what we have been up to at Global Changemakers, the launch of our new courses and the plethora of live and virtual events we’ve hosted this year. As we move closer to the last quarter of the year we want to focus on supporting and providing more resources to our growing community of students.

Our years of experience working with changemakers have taught us the importance of enhancing young changemakers' motivation and work with the necessary set of skills and financial resources to sustain their impact over time. This has been a key priority for the past months, as we have created several scholarship programs that provide access to those changemakers who can make the most of the resources and create a positive impact in their communities.

With such an objective in mind, these are the most important updates from 2023 so far:

 5k Student Milestone

After launching our Changemakers School in 2020 we have now reached +5,000 students from over 146 different countries. Our offer has also increased, now having available courses in Project Management, Menstrual Sexual and Reproductive Health, Facilitation skills and Ecology. Some of the materials from our courses have also been used to reach and cascade train communities, reaching over 15,000 indirectly people trained with our materials.

International Youth Day 2023

To commemorate this year’s International Youth Day we celebrated a live workshop called “Manos a la Obra” for our hispanic community where we invited changemakers from our network to learn about the importance of facilitation skills and how to use them to thrive as leaders within the social impact ecosystem. The participants of the workshop were also given a full scholarship to access the Project Management Course in our online school. After seeing the impact this scholarship had on the attendants we decided to extend the celebration to our followers in social media and gave away over 300 scholarships for those who wrote to our instagram account telling us about their work and how the course could enhance their impact.

Youth Impacting the SDGs: How are they doing it?

We partnered up with the United Nations Human Security For All Campaign to talk about the current state of youth generated impact in the different fields and goals that need to be tackled before 2030. This live event was open for everyone and had the involvement from the prolific alumni of our network Laura Zarta and Nhial Deng as well as moderated by Meigan Diaz and Dora Damjanovic from the HS4A Campaign.

“Menstruación, Salud Sexual y Reproductiva“ Course Promotion

As part of our mission to deliver key skills and knowledge to the young people creating positive change around the world, we launched on March 8th our Spanish version of the Menstruation, Sexual and Reproductive health. We faced a slower enrollment rate in the Spanish version of the course. Cultural and religious views in Latin America may associate menstruation and sexual health with stigma and taboos. However, after several live events and partnerships with local schools in Latin America we have reached our first 500 students for this course. The two versions of this course have reached over 2290 students.

Towards COP 28: Are we Prepared?

COP28 is just around the corner and we wanted to hear directly from the changemakers working on climate and to learn more about what needs to be done to address our current climate situation. On September 27th we held a live space for our community to open the discussion and get a deep dive into the outcomes of COP27, what ecoanxiety is and how to amplify the pivotal role of youth in the shaping of a green future. In this event moderated by Meigan Díaz we had the opportunity to talk with GCM Alumni Daniel Voskoboynik and Shruti Vijayakumar as well Roberto Hernández as a guest speaker to discuss how young activists can prepare for this international conference.

Social Entrepreneurship Workshop for Students

For our Project Management students we are constantly in the search of new contents and spaces to enable them to grow as changemakers. We held a poll on what topics would complement the best the knowledge they got from the course and the topic that had most students interested was learning the basics of social entrepreneurship. With that in mind, we partnered up with Julia Schetelig, Chief of Staff at Gridware, a California-based startup dedicated to preventing wildfires to learn more about what Social Entrepreneurship entangles through a workshop for our students held on September 30th.

New Grant Cycle coming up next

In order to achieve the future we want to see, we need to provide the necessary resources to the changemakers that are shaping the future. We are glad to announce we will be launching a new grant application cycle for our students on November 1st. Stay tuned to see what new projects come up from this cycle.
