A Tapestry of Progress

By Sam Kemp | Program Coordinator

Thanks to donor support and our amazing partners in Guatemala, HSP, and our sister nonprofit, AMA's recent activities have been successful in improving socio-economic conditions and overall well-being in the communities we serve, promoting greater agency and success for women, and boosting community self-sufficiency, fostering their personal and community growth. Here are some updates from the past few months:

In August, AMA organized an exchange program with highland midwives. This event focused on strengthening and preserving ancestral knowledge, reflecting AMA's commitment to upholding traditional practices and wisdom in the highlands.

In September, AMA celebrated the completion of the "Time Keepers" diploma program. This program, crucial for preserving Mayan culture and knowledge, concluded with the selection of new ambassadors of the Mayan Cosmovision. Guadalupe Blevins, AMA's General Director and founder, awarded diplomas to the participants. Each diploma was also accompanied by a handcrafted pillow, made by Pixan artisans. The event also took time to honor teachers Dr. Daniel Matul and Maestro Audelino Sac Coyoy.

Later in October, AMA held workshops on the therapeutic and creative aspects of knitting, highlighting how each strand of thread carries a unique story and dedication, illustrating the deep connection between craft and personal expression.

This project continues to be a means of real change and empowerment for Maya women in the Guatemalan highlands through its dedication to cultural preservation, personal development, and community engagement. We want to thank all of the great people who have been involved with this program!
