Behind every community dream, is a team

By Lesly Bravo | Well Being Promoter, Midwife & Doula

In the highlands of Guatemala, indigenous communities build paths of hope every day. Yet, many of the stories that transform community life often remain unseen in the final snapshots of completed projects.

Behind every school kitchen, every stove built in a home, every volunteer who arrives to learn from community life, and every woman who earns an income through her handcrafted work, there is a team dedicating time, effort, and conviction to make those dreams a reality.

At the Association of Women of the Highlands, projects begin long before the visible activities take place. It all starts with a shared vision: to stand alongside indigenous communities in strengthening their dignity, capabilities, and opportunities.

Every project starts with listening. Communities voice their needs and dreams—to improve school meals, provide clean water and sanitation, enhance education, enrich family living conditions, strengthen community health, or create economic opportunities for families.

One space that fosters this connection is our sister organization, Partners in Service, through the Community Engaged Learning program. This program links people from different countries with the daily lives of rural communities. Many participants arrive without understanding the local language, yet they discover that communication can emerge from simple gestures—a smile, a respectful glance, or shared work in the fields. These experiences forge mutual learning and deeply human relationships.

To make these encounters possible, the association’s team works for months, building partnerships with universities, churches, and supportive organizations. Proposals are developed, community stories are shared, and relationships built on trust and commitment are nurtured.

Another critical focus of the association’s work is its support for entrepreneurial women. Across many communities, women continue ancestral traditions of creating handwoven textiles passed down through generations. Other local producers seek opportunities to sell their goods in local markets, offering products such as natural cosmetics, chocolates, and more.

With patience and creativity, they craft a wide variety of items imbued with cultural memory. The association supports these efforts by organizing orders, developing designs, and opening marketing opportunities that provide families with income. Every textile is more than a handcrafted piece; it is a living expression of resilience, identity, and Mayan wisdom.

All of this is made possible by the commitment of a team working behind the scenes. Coordinating participants, managing resources, and handling financial administration—each person plays an essential role in ensuring that projects are developed with transparency and responsibility. These efforts rarely make it into the photographs, yet they underpin every success achieved.

The needs within these communities are profound, and one of the greatest challenges remains securing the funding required to sustain projects. Despite this, the association’s team continues to work with hope and determination.

Every realized initiative becomes a seed that inspires new dreams. When a community sees its voice heard and its ideas turned into concrete actions, the belief in the possibility of change grows stronger.

Because behind every project, there is more than just hard work; there are people who deeply believe in solidarity, community organization, and the dignity of all peoples. And even if they don’t often appear in the final picture, they carry the quiet fulfillment of knowing that together, they’ve helped transform lives.

Step into a story of hope and progress. With your support, communities flourish, creating opportunities for brighter tomorrows. Together, we can make a difference.
