Oral Rehydration for 5,000 Children with Diarrhea

by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte
Oral Rehydration for 5,000 Children with Diarrhea

Summary

Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under five, and in Nigeria, it accounts for more than 70,000 child deaths each year (UNICEF, 2023). Many of these deaths are preventable with timely oral rehydration solution (ORS) and zinc treatment. In rural and low-income communities, families lack access to these simple, life-saving treatments. This project will provide free ORS and zinc to 5,000 children suffering from diarrhea, helping prevent dehydration and death.

Challenge

In Nigeria, many children die from diarrhea because families cannot access treatment quickly. Clinics in rural areas are often far away, and when parents do reach them, ORS and zinc may be unavailable. Dehydration sets in rapidly, and without treatment, it becomes fatal. Nigeria's child mortality rate remains among the highest globally, with diarrhea as a leading cause. Without affordable and reliable treatment, thousands of children are at constant risk.

Solution

The project will distribute oral rehydration solution and zinc tablets to families and local clinics serving low-income communities. Health workers will be trained to provide treatment and teach parents how to prepare and administer ORS. By making treatment free and easy to access, children will receive care before dehydration becomes fatal. This reduces preventable deaths and builds local capacity for timely response to diarrheal cases.

Long-Term Impact

With ORS and zinc treatment available in rural and underserved areas, fewer children will die from diarrhea. Parents will learn how to manage diarrhea at home, reducing the need for long, costly clinic visits. Health workers will be better prepared to respond quickly to future cases. In the long run, communities will have stronger child survival rates, and families will gain confidence in using simple treatments that save lives.
