Hello Friends,
It's Valentine's Day—and today we are celebrating our love for our community. Young people, parents, teachers, staff, donors, supporters—everyone whose dedication, passion, and generosity make our work possible! Together, we are creating opportunities for young people in Honduras to rise above their circumstances and drive change in their communities.
Last month, we welcomed 95 new and returning students into our scholarship community. Among them are young mothers getting a second chance at an education, first-generation students eager to return to school, young people who have lost their parents and homes, young people who find joy in art by themselves and in community. Every young person who comes through our doors has a unique story, but all are united by a common belief: education is the way up and out.
That belief carried Jennifer through high school, on to university, and all the way to graduation.
Jennifer grew up in a rural community where continuing her education wasn’t easy. At 14, she moved closer to the city to live with relatives who played a key role in supporting her studies. In 2018, she joined OYE’s scholarship program as a ninth grader—a scholarship that would support her all the way through university. In her words: "OYE’s support was a life-changing opportunity because it allowed me to go to university. In my community, higher education isn’t an option, so seeing me as a university student had a real impact."
Last year, Jennifer graduated as a clinical laboratory technician. Today, she’s putting her knowledge to work in the lab, turning her dreams into reality.
It takes a community to make stories like Jennifer’s possible—thank you for being part of ours.
In appreciation,
Amanda
