Project Summary

According to United Nations data, Tanzania ranks 15th among the "least developed countries" and continues to struggle with poverty despite the economic progress of the last decade. Approximately three-quarters of the population resides in rural areas, where 80% of the poor population lives under challenging conditions in rural households.

The Kongwa region in Dodoma, Tanzania, is home to a predominantly Muslim community of nearly 310,000 people. In Kongwa, where poverty and rurality are deeply intertwined, the significant lack of infrastructure makes access to education and healthcare nearly impossible. The nearest health center is approximately a 4-hour drive away. While this distance is difficult to cover under normal circumstances, it becomes nearly impassable during the rainy seasons. For the local population facing food insecurity, access to clean water is also among the most critical needs. Sanitation issues contribute to the spread of epidemics; even diseases treatable with medication or simple procedures pose life-threatening risks due to the lack of healthcare access.

To improve the living conditions of the local population, Doctors Worldwide opened the first and only health center in the Kongwa region on July 6, 2025. In addition to providing healthcare services, the clinic aims to contribute to the healthcare system by providing employment for local health workers, supplying necessary equipment, and offering professional training. A total of 10 staff members work at the clinic, including 1 supervisor, 1 consultant, 1 laboratory technician, 2 doctors, 1 pharmacist, 2 nurses, 1 cleaning staff member, and 1 security guard.

Achievements and Impact

Between April and July 2026, healthcare services at the Yeryüzü Doktorlar Kongwa Health Center were delivered regularly and reached a significant number of beneficiaries. During this period, services continued to focus mainly on medical examinations, medication support, and laboratory testing.

A total of 4,626 medical examinations were provided throughout this four-month period. Monthly data show that 1,726 people received services in April, 1,142 in May, 1,003 in June, and 755 in July. Medication support reached 799 beneficiaries in April, 785 in May, 660 in June, and 546 in July, amounting to 2,790 individuals across the period.

In addition, 1,574 laboratory tests were conducted during this period. Of these, 355 were carried out in April, 504 in May, 362 in June, and 353 in July. These services supported the diagnosis and treatment of patients and strengthened the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

Overall, the health center has significantly impacted the region by providing thousands of medical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory services. Since the beginning of 2026, the center has delivered 6,923 medical examinations, provided medication support to 4,658 individuals, and conducted 2,544 laboratory tests. The consistent delivery of these services demonstrates the important role of the health center in meeting essential healthcare needs and improving access to services for the local population.

In conclusion, the health services provided by the center have played a vital role in addressing the essential healthcare needs of the local population. From April through July 2026, the center facilitated thousands of medical, medication, and laboratory interventions, highlighting its significant contribution to improving healthcare access in the region. The consistent delivery of these services has not only strengthened the local health system but also effectively reduced barriers to care for vulnerable communities. Overall, the project underscores the critical importance of sustained healthcare interventions in improving health outcomes and fostering long-term community resilience.
