Sixteen years ago the last thing I wanted to do, the scariest thing I could think of, was to start a rescue- of any kind. I knew how overwhelming it would be, what a slippery slope. And I knew that pigeons, those overlooked souls so in need of rescue assistance, had a terrible PR problem (this is changing!). What I didn't know was how amazing each and every single one of these birds would be. I love animals and pigeons were included in that love but back then, I really didn't know who pigeons were. I just knew they needed help.
Now I know that pigeons are more amazing than one could ever imagine: Their charm, resilience, intelligence, strength... their beauty. I am preaching to the choir, I know. And so, amidst all the stress and strain, despite all the struggle and hardship, I am here today to share with you just a few of the many wonders and inspirations they give us every day.
Opal, pictured above, came to Palomacy through a parrot store. From time to time, people bring them pigeons or doves and they immediately call our Care Director Jill. Opal was brought in as a found stray and they said she seemed healthy, was eating and active. But, upon examining her, Jill found four puncture wounds hidden beneath her feathers. Birds' wounds and injuies can be hard to see because feathers hide so much. What seems like a small puncture can be deep and life threatening and even if the wound is slight, depending on the bacteria that was introduced, it can still become fatal. Opal and Jill headed to an avian vet where she was prescribed antibiotics. See this brave young bird's recovery at the link below.
Feathers & Fashion: Celebrating Cooture! On 10/22, nearly one hundred pigeon and dove lovers, from veterans to newbies, came together to celebrate at Palomacy's 2023 party. And wow, it was awesome! Volunteer Heather Hamilton writes, Palomacy's celebration of cooture at Feathers & Fashion was unforgettable. The guests were dressed to impress. Both feathered and featherless partygoers looked their best. Everyone loved Mother Pigeon's special guest appearance where the Priestess of Pigeon Religion talked about her art, advocacy and love of pigeons. The fashion show featuring adoptable birds had the paparazzi snapping photos left and right as the models strutted down the runway. Everyone enjoyed good vegan food, great conversation, and reveled in their shared love of pigeons. Palomacy's work was furthered by the fundraising and coo-munity building and we're grateful to everyone who contributed to this very special gathering.
