Palomacy Saves Domestic Pigeons & Doves 2023

Patter

When Palomacy Care Director Jill got the late night text about a "very malnourished pigeon" found lying unmoving in a yard, she knew rescue was urgent. When she saw the failing bird's photo, she immediately grabbed her keys and went to pick her up, "lights and sirens" as we call it. Little Patter was so weak, dehydrated and emaciated, weighing only half of what she should, that Jill feared, even with the subcutaneous fluids, tiny re-feeding meal of watery formula and supportive padded bedding she provided, that she might not survive the night. Patter did! And she is recovering. Being lost and unequipped to survive on her own had pushed the little domestic bird to the very edge of life. Thankfully her rescue came just in time. She is steadily gaining weight and strength and still has a ways to go. We are honored to give little Patter all the love and support she needs on her way to finding her forever home. Spencer

The badly injured domestic pigeon pictured standing in a shelter kennel had been taken many miles away from his coop, forced to try and "race" home, and been caught by a hawk on the way. He had miraculously gotten away from the predator and even more miraculously been found alive and taken to the open door municipal shelter. Where, unclaimed and in need of surgery to repair his wound, he once again faced death- euthanasia- unless Palomacy rescued him. We said yes. It should have been an easy decision, of course we would help him! Saying yes though, when we are already overfull and underfunded, is a total leap of faith. Faith that new fosters and adopters will make the space for the nonstop flow of birds needing help and that new and existing donors will give as generously as the expenses require. Spencer, for his part, has excelled. He handled the surgical wound cleaning and closing without issue. He graciously tolerated the twice a day medicines prescribed and patiently waited out the month of cage rest he needed to heal up his stitched injury. He's recovered now, fostering in an aviary with other rescued pigeons, looking forward to the day that he is adopted and gets to really go home. (See his blog post & more photos here.)

Beautiful Healthy Northern California Ringneck Doves Urgently Need Homes- Foster or Forever

This beautiful, healthy flock of Ringneck doves is losing their aviary home in Sebastopol CA through no fault of theirs. Their person has to move and is taking the six they can house indoors but has no place for the other 16. These birds can be rehomed in mated pairs, small groups or as a thriving, cheerful flock. Ringneck doves are easy to care for and full of charm. They will repay your gift of a home and food with a front row seat to their musical cooing, lively dramas and tender romances. Fake eggs included to prevent hatching! Palomacy will assist with care and aviary coaching and transport in Northern California. See more photos here.
