The Papayo Coastal Lagoon in Lajas was deforested and cut off from the ocean in the 1940s for salt production. Severe loss of mangroves and high salinity levels inhibit marine life. This project is focused on planting native trees with the goal of restoring natural conditions in the area. These trees will help enhance coastal conditions in the lagoon and will also protect the historically underserved Papayo community. Your help enables us to continue helping these communities and ecosystems.
On September 30th, students from Lajas, San Germán, Cabo Rojo, Yauco joined PDC's mangrove restoration project. Together, they planted mangrove seedlings in coastal areas susceptible to erosion, flooding, and dust storms. This hands-on experience provided students with a deeper understanding of the critical role mangroves play in safeguarding our coastlines. By expanding mangrove forests, PDC aims to mitigate climate change impacts and create resilient ecosystems for future generations. Through initiatives like these, we empower students to become active environmental stewards and contribute to a sustainable future.
