The Papayo Coastal Lagoon in Lajas suffered significant damage in the 1940s when it was deforested and separated from the ocean for salt production. This resulted in the severe loss of mangroves and increased salinity, making it difficult for marine life to thrive. This project aims to restore the lagoon's natural conditions by planting native trees, which will improve the coastal environment and protect the historically underserved Papayo community. Your support enables us to continue this vital work. To date, Protectores de Cuencas (PDC) has planted various mangrove species that will help reduce fugitive dust and erosion, while also promoting biodiversity. Ongoing maintenance, including watering, is essential for the conservation of these newly planted trees.
