The Papayo Coastal Lagoon in Lajas faced severe ecological damage in the 1940s. Deforestation and its separation from the ocean for salt production led to a drastic loss of mangroves and a spike in salinity, making it nearly impossible for marine life to flourish. Our project is dedicated to reversing this damage and restoring the lagoon's natural vitality by planting native trees. This crucial work will not only revitalize the coastal environment but also provide vital protection for the historically underserved Papayo community.
Your support is essential to continue this critical mission. To date, Protectores de Cuencas (PDC) has successfully planted a variety of mangrove species. These efforts are already making a difference by reducing fugitive dust and erosion, and significantly boosting the area's biodiversity. Sustained maintenance, including regular watering, is key to ensuring the long-term health and growth of these newly planted trees.
