The Papayo Coastal Lagoon in Lajas, Puerto Rico, suffered devastating ecological harm in the 1940s. Driven by salt production, the clearing of surrounding forests and the lagoon's separation from the ocean caused a catastrophic loss of mangroves and a spike in salinity. The result was an environment nearly devoid of marine life and natural vitality.
Our project is a dedicated mission to heal this historical damage. By planting native trees—a crucial mix of mangrove species and other coastal flora—we are reversing the decades of degradation. This work is about more than just ecological recovery; it's about providing vital protection for the historically underserved Papayo community, strengthening their natural defenses against coastal erosion and climate change.
Making a Difference, Together
To date, Protectores de Cuencas (PDC) has achieved significant milestones, successfully planting a diverse array of mangrove species and actively replacing those that don't survive. These efforts are already yielding tangible results:
Reducing fugitive dust and erosion.
Significantly boosting the area's biodiversity.
However, the long-term success of this restoration hinges on sustained support. Sustained maintenance, including regular watering and care, is the key to ensuring the newly planted trees thrive and the lagoon's health is permanently secured.
Your support is essential to continue this critical mission and fully restore the natural vitality of the Papayo Coastal Lagoon.
