This program will aid in the planning, design, implementation, restoration, and construction of projects that seed from and respond to the needs of marginalized and vulnerable communities across Puerto Rico.
The Participatory Design Lab is La Marana's community-based program for co-designing solutions to local challenges. Through a collaborative process, communities work alongside designers, planners, and other practitioners to identify priorities, imagine solutions, and develop practical projects that strengthen their territories. The Lab centers local knowledge, collective decision-making, and community leadership, turning ideas into action.
The Participatory Design Lab gives communities more tools and technical support in collaborative processes to turn local knowledge and priorities into actionable projects. In the Lab communities identify challenges, explore and prototype solutions, and develop concrete proposals for community infrastructure. By connecting community leadership with design expertise, the Lab helps communities build capacity, mobilize resources, and turn ideas into action.
Through the Participatory Design Lab, we aim to build lasting community capacity to address challenges such as displacement, climate change, and deteriorating infrastructure. By strengthening local leadership, planning skills, and collective decision-making, the Lab helps communities develop and sustain resilient, locally driven solutions that improve their spaces and quality of life over the long term.
