Protectores de Cuencas Inc. (PDC) is actively working to restore the Guánica State Forest, a vital part of Puerto Rico's ecosystem that's highly susceptible to wildfires. With the help of donated funds, PDC is increasing the production of native trees and ensuring their successful growth to support long-term reforestation.
From May to July, PDC's efforts included crucial tasks like irrigating existing plants, removing invasive species, and replacing any dead trees. Ensuring trees adapt to dry forests means taking deliberate steps to help them not just survive, but truly thrive, in environments with limited water. This is especially crucial in places like Puerto Rico, where distinct dry seasons are a regular occurrence.
In the upcoming months, PDC will continue these essential maintenance activities, focusing on ongoing invasive species management, strategic tree replacement, and expanding native tree plantings along PR-33.
