Summary

The impact of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica's healthcare system has been devastating. With 124 medical clinics destroyed and 5 hospitals damaged, one of the hardest hit facilities is Cornwall Regional Hospital, which serves more than 500,000 people and lost 157 beds. Third Wave Volunteers has formed an alliance with 12 other U.S.-based nonprofits to help build a permanent dome hospital to restore critical services. We urgently need financial support to complete this support for Cornwall Hospital.

Challenge

After Hurricane Melissa, conditions at Cornwall Regional Hospital have become dangerously overcrowded. Serving more than 500,000 people, the hospital lost 157 beds in critical capacity, 124 medical clinics were destroyed, and five hospitals were damaged across the region. CPR is being performed on the floor, trauma patients sit in chairs after surgery due to a lack of beds, and babies are being delivered in closets -

Solution

This Dome hospital project will solve the problem of the Cornwall hospital losing 157 beds from hurricane Melissa, which has trauma patients sitting in chairs after operations, and babies being born in closets.

Long-Term Impact

This dome hospital will become a permanent structure with 100 new beds, assisting the Cornwall hospital in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa. It will strengthen the existing hospital, which has trauma patients in chairs after operations and babies being born in closets.
