PAWS for Change: Help Roaming Dogs in Peru

Since our last project report, we’ve had another successful adoption from our partner shelter! It’s always such a joy when one of our volunteers falls in love with a pup at the shelter and decides they just can’t live without them!  Jana volunteered at the shelter this past April where she met Deysi, a beautiful girl who was always a favourite among volunteers and staff. Jana decided to adopt Deysi and take her back to her home in San Francisco.

While the overseas adoption process can sometimes be tedious with paperwork and records (but easier if you are from certain countries, depending on your country’s laws), it is certainly worth the effort. Just look at Deysi’s face!  We couldn’t be happier that Deysi has found her forever home and that Jana has a new best friend – the best souvenir anyone could ever bring back from Peru!

However, we are still trying to combat the fact that dogs like Deysi end up on the street at all. Deysi was one of the lucky ones who found care and love in a shelter and then was even more lucky to find an adopter. But most of the street dogs in Cusco have a far more heart-breaking fate. Without controlling the overall population in Cusco in a humane way, and striving for a spay-neuter programme that reaches even outlying areas, stories like Deysi’s become less of a possibility.

We are still working to raise enough funds to outfit a mobile clinic to reach as many dogs in Cusco as we can. Without supporters like you, it won’t be possible!  Can you help us spread the word? We hope that you can! And be sure to check out and follow our new PAWS Facebook page!
