Peru has a population of around 33 million people and faces significant challenges in its donation and transplantation system. According to publicly available GlobalGiving data, nearly 13,000 Peruvians are currently on dialysis, and almost 1,000 people remain on the national waiting list for a transplant. In 2020, only 49 patients received a transplant, leaving the majority without access to the treatment that could restore their health.
DTI Foundation’s “Peru – Save 1 Million Lives” project focuses on strengthening the country’s professional capacity by training one Peruvian healthcare professional through the TPM programme and a two-week internship in Spain. Participants learn about donor evaluation, communication strategies, donor management protocols and the coordination necessary to convert potential donors into actual transplants.
On returning to Peru, trained professionals can support:
• donor identification in hospitals
• clinical coordination and logistics
• mentoring and training of colleagues
• efforts to decrease waiting lists and strengthen national donation systems
Your contribution helps Peru expand its donation activity and reduce dependence on dialysis. Supporting this project means offering hope to thousands of families waiting for a life-saving organ that could change their future.
