Project Report | Oct 17, 2025
2025 World Cleanup Day

By Chunrong Wang | Chief Executive Officer

To all donors who care about the future of our planet:

Thank you for your continued attention and generous support for environmental protection. With gratitude and excitement, we present to you the progress and achievements of 2025 World Cleanup Day in China. With your trust and contribution, this nationwide environmental movement—guided by the spirit of “5% Action, 100% Impact”—has continued to create lasting ripples of positive change.

A Global Movement — China Shines on the World Stage

On September 20, 2025, World Cleanup Day once again became a global highlight. According to data from our global partner Meltwater, volunteers in 190 countries and regions joined hands in cleanup actions—covering nearly 90% of all UN member states. Related topics were mentioned 429 million times in international media, reaching a potential audience of 2.4 billion people, igniting a true global environmental wave.

In China, the campaign was led by “Pickup China”, in collaboration with the SEE Foundation, River Watchers, Zero Waste Alliance, and many other organizations. Now in its eighth year, the initiative has gone beyond traditional cleanup activities, achieving both greater breadth and depth of impact.

A Nationwide Effort — Nearly 200,000 Volunteers Building a Cleaner China

Under the rallying theme of “5% Action, 100% Impact,” the 2025 campaign inspired nearly 200,000 volunteers across the country to take action. From bustling cities to remote villages, from mountains to rivers and coastlines, an immense “green tapestry” of cleanup efforts unfolded across China:

  • Urban Integration: Cities such as Tianjin and Wuhan linked cleanup activities with the “Zero-Waste City” initiative, integrating environmental protection into urban governance.

  • Waterway Protection: Teams in Chongqing, Liaocheng (Shandong), and Yingkou (Liaoning) focused on rivers, lakes, and coastlines through targeted cleanup actions.

  • Rural Revitalization: Volunteers in Hunan launched the “100-Meter Civilization Action”—cleaning up areas around homes and roadsides to promote beautiful, livable villages.

  • Eco-Sensitive Area Actions: 22 “Sustainability Pioneer Teams” ventured into key ecological zones such as Mount Wutai, Sanjiangyuan, and the Hutuo River, combining deep cleanup work with on-site environmental education—turning every act of picking up waste into a moment of awareness.

Innovation and Transformation — From End-of-Pipe Cleanup to Circular Solutions

This year, our efforts extended beyond cleaning to driving systemic change. For the first time, World Cleanup Day China focused on textile waste management, launching the “Textile Waste Recycling Advocacy Program”—addressing an often-overlooked industrial environmental challenge.

  • Old Clothes, New Life: In Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, 20% of local teams ran clothing collection, upcycling, and exchange programs.

  • Creative Community Practices: Events such as community swap markets, upcycling craft workshops, and eco-design exhibitions gave old fabrics a second life and a new story.

  • Environmental Impact: According to UNEP data, recycling one ton of clothing can reduce 3.6 tons of carbon emissions, save 0.5 tons of crude oil, and conserve 20 tons of water. Our collective efforts are helping shift from fast fashion to slow circular living.

Cross-Sector Collaboration — Amplifying the Voice of Environmental Action

Through diverse partnerships and creative outreach, we continued to expand public awareness and participation:

  • Celebrity Advocacy: Actress Ning Chang, our China Ambassador, joined forces with footballer Xiao Yuyi, mountaineer Han Zijun, and 11 other cross-sector advocates to champion the cause.

  • Art Empowering Sustainability: The release of a themed comic series and the original song “5% Battery” captured the emotional and human side of everyday environmental efforts.

  • Technology-Enabled Action: Digital tools such as the “Pickup Planet” mini-program, national beach cleanup live streams, and “plogging” initiatives built an accessible, connected network for environmental participation.

Your Support Creates Real Change

Every donation is a cornerstone of this transformation. Your contributions have provided vital logistical resources, event materials, and public engagement opportunities, allowing more people to participate, learn, and fall in love with environmental action.

We believe that protecting the planet doesn’t require perfection—only the courage to begin. Every step counts, and your support makes each one possible.

Looking Ahead — Growing Seeds of Change

Although World Cleanup Day 2025 has come to a close, its influence continues to grow. What we see today is no longer just a one-day event—it has evolved into a citizen-driven ecosystem for sustainable environmental practice, deeply rooted in domestic communities and aligned with global sustainability goals.

Moving forward, we will keep advancing the “End Cleanup + Source Reduction + Circular Utilization” model, engaging more cities, communities, and enterprises in this shared journey.

With your ongoing support, we truly believe that 5% of action can lead to 100% of positive change—for a cleaner China and a greener Earth.

Thank you once again for your trust, partnership, and dedication.

Let us continue working hand in hand to pick up a cleaner China—and a more beautiful planet.
