Report on Replacement of Saplings in Butangamundu

By UWIZEYIMANA JEAN DAMASCENE | Project Leader

Dear Patrons,

In Land 7, located on the Butangamundu hill in the Burega Sector of Rwanda, a significant environmental restoration project has been underway. This report details the recent efforts to replace 800 saplings that died due to exposure to harsh sunlight. The specific coordinates for the plantation area are Latitude -1.748808° and Longitude 30.058557°.

Background

The project aimed to enhance reforestation efforts in the Butangamundu hill area, contributing to local biodiversity, soil stabilization, and community benefits through improved environmental conditions. The initial phase involved the planting of various saplings, including Eucalyptus, chosen for their fast growth and suitability for the local climate.

Issues Encountered

Despite initial success of planting 5000 Saplings, a severe issue arose due to unexpected harsh sunlight conditions that led to the mortality of 800 saplings. This setback necessitated immediate action to ensure the continuity and success of the reforestation project.

Replacement Efforts

To address the loss, a new batch of Eucalyptus saplings was planted. The replacement involved:

  1. Site Preparation: The planting area was prepared to optimize conditions for the new saplings.
  2. Selection of Saplings: The replacement saplings were carefully selected to ensure they were resilient and healthy, capable of withstanding local climatic conditions.
  3. Planting Process: The new saplings were planted in the same coordinates (Lat -1.748808°, Long 30.058557°) on Butangamundu hill. The planting process was overseen by local forestry expert of Burega sector to ensure proper techniques were followed.

Impact and Benefits

The replacement of the 800 Eucalyptus saplings is expected to have several positive outcomes:

  • Environmental Restoration: The 5000 saplingsin total  planted  in land 7 will contribute to the restoration of the local ecosystem, enhancing biodiversity and providing habitats for various species.
  • Soil Stabilization: Eucalyptus trees are known for their deep root systems, which help in preventing soil erosion, a significant concern in hilly areas.
  • Community Benefits: The project supports the local community by potentially providing resources like timber and non-timber forest products in the future, along with improving the microclimate.

Future Plans

To ensure the long-term success of this reforestation effort, ongoing monitoring and maintenance will be critical. Plans include:

  • Regular inspections to monitor the health and growth of the saplings.
  • Continued soil and water management practices including rehabilitation of terracing.
  • Community involvement and education on sustainable forestry practices.

Conclusion

The replacement of 800 Eucalyptus saplings on Butangamundu hill marks a crucial step in the reforestation project within the Burega Sector. With careful planning and execution, this initiative is expected to overcome the initial challenges posed by harsh sunlight and contribute significantly to environmental conservation and community development in the region.

Continued efforts and adaptive management will be key to ensuring the enduring success of this important project.

Kind regards

Jean Damascene Uwizeyimana
