Meet just one of our amazing tree planting crews! Elizabeth, Johanna, her 5 year old daughter Darjennay who came with her mommy this day, Leticia, Lilliana, Isabel and Project Leader, Jenny. This bunch of Costa Rican women can do it all. Each one carries a box of 25 trees for long distances to inaccessible farms and river borders. Several can swing the machete with expertise! Sharp shovels make digging the holes in compacted deforested soils a little easier. Planting the trees in mixed native species frameworks teaches about the importance of planting a wide diversity of species.
Our tree planting and maintenance crews are varied so that we can include as many people as possible, men and women. Earning money for planting and caring for trees long term on their own farms notably lifts self-esteem and gives everyone in the community a real boost. Creating sustainable employment with the local Costa Rican community every step of the reforestation process actually insures that the trees prosper and achieve maximum growth rates. Without maintenance, trees planted in cattle grasses die from suffocation. We all just love to plant trees, especially near the Equator, for all the amazing benefits they give all of us. Thank you for your continued support!
