We bridge the critical gap in long-term palliative care in rural Poland. Our "Mobilna Warta" volunteers provide non-medical, emotional support and presence to terminally ill seniors who are left to face the paralyzing fear of death alone due to systemic healthcare shortages.
In rural Poland (Chojnice, Supsk), terminally ill seniors face a tragic gap in palliative care. When cancer treatments end, hospices are full. Left at home without daytime medical care, patients spend their final weeks terrified and alone during afternoons and nights. With youth migrating to cities, over 20% of the population are seniors. They face this paralyzing fear of death in complete isolation, lacking emotional support when the healthcare system exhausts its medical options.
Fundacja Ostatnia Warta fills this void with the Mobilna Warta project. We deploy trained volunteers directly to patients' homes for non-medical Sitting Services. We offer unhurried presence, emotional validation, and a safe space. Terminally ill individuals often open up more easily to our volunteers than to families. This model provides crucial comfort during their final, loneliest hours while giving exhausted informal family caregivers a much-needed, vital respite to recover.
Your support prevents silent, undignified deaths in marginalized regions. We are building a scalable, community-based care model that shifts end-of-life support from strict medicalization to human rights and relational care. By funding our operations, we advocate for systemic change, ensuring compassionate communities where no senior is left behind to face death alone. We permanently empower local caregivers and integrate supported decision-making into standard palliative care.
