Investing in skilled health workers in rural remote communities in Uganda

GEC POCUS Training
GEC POCUS Training

There are global disparities in the provision of maternal health care, with women from rural communities and underresourced countries expecting poorer access to healthcare services. This potentially compounds the existing higher burden of maternal and neonatal morbidity within these populations. In this setting, pointofcare ultrasound (PoCUS) has the potential to improve outcomes while mitigating challenges and barriers associated with the introduction of new medical technology.

Despite the welldocumented benefits of antenatal care and ultrasound, there are global disparities in access. Women in underresourced countries particularly in Uganda are less likely to attend antenatal visits and access ultrasound services. Disparities persist in Uganda Like in many other developing countries, with rural communities less likely to access obstetric ultrasound compared to women living in urban settings. In order to bridge the disparities, Global Emergency Care (GEC) continues to carry out Capacity Building Trainings in Bedside-Ultrasound Scan to boost the management of patients in rural communities’ health facilities of Uganda.

As demonstrated by GEC Point of Care Ultrasound trainees Joanita who wrote…

“My name is Joanita , the POCUS training was timely and I hope you can make it more frequent and also accessible to many other health facilities in rural areas in Uganda “After undergoing this training, I now do basic ultrasound scan like looking for heartbeat, seeing the placenta, the baby presentation, while before we used to refer the pregnant mothers to City centers for Radiology services. It’s now good that l can do these basic checks now, this has made my clinical decisions quicker. l therefore appreciate the training so much because it has helped us save our pregnant women a lot of trouble”.
