44 New Families Helped in Post-Ebola Guinea
MindLeaps has started serving 44 new youth in Conakry, Guinea, to reach our goal of helping families recover from Ebola.
The epidemic broke out over two years ago, but the repercussions are still being felt – especially among youth who were already struggling to survive. The Economist reported last month that economic growth fell from 4.5% to 2.4% during the epidemic. With your help, we are serving families struggling to recover.
Partnering to Strengthen Our Impact
On September 19, MindLeaps started a six-week program with EDUGRADE to serve 44 youth and their families. In typical MindLeaps-style, the program attracts youth to EDUGRADE’s center through dance classes. Dance is loved by youth and is an incredibly effective way of ensuring they attend regularly and improve their other skills.
The program provides classes in IT and English with four Guinean staff members from EDUGRADE and MindLeaps.
Every Friday, MindLeaps’ Children’s Coordinator, Martin, visits youth’s families and delivers direct food support to the primary caretaker. You can see one of our typical community meetings with the families of the youth in these photos.
What’s Next?
Of the youth participating in this program, 22 children do not go to school. Their families are too unstable to support even the minimal costs of public day school. The average income in Guinea is less than $1.80/day (The Economist, 2016).
MindLeaps is working to raise $400/child and a total amount of $8,800 USD to send these 22 youth to school in January 2017.
